Bengaluru, BBMP 148 new illegal PG accommodations have been identified following inspections last month, taking the total number of such illegal facilities to 2,330. The civic body also found that 658 of these PGs had violated regulatory guidelines.
According to BBMP data obtained by TOI, the eastern zone has 547 Unauthorized PGAfter this is Mahadevpura with 527. The highest number of violations were recorded in unauthorized PGs in the eastern zone, with 364 of them operating outside the rules. In Mahadevapura, 29 unauthorized PGs were non-compliant.
It may be recalled that in July a man walked into a PG in Koramangala and murdered a woman, highlighting the security risk faced by inmates of such facilities. The BBMP and police responded by announcing a new set of guidelines for them to follow.
“Residents of East and Mahadevpura zones have been continuously complaining about the menace of illegal PGs and their non-compliance with rules and are demanding strict action to regulate them,” said a senior BBMP official.
Even the authorized PGs of the city are not free from violations. Of the 2,180 registered PGs, 595 were found violating the rules, with Mahadevapura topping the list again with 276 non-compliant authorized PGs. The findings have highlighted the scale of challenges faced by the civic body in implementing the guidelines.
Areas like Bommanahalli and Yelahanka recorded full compliance among registered PGs, but the East and South zones reported significant non-compliance. All 81 authorized PGs in Bommanahalli area follow BBMP guidelines, while in RR Nagar, only 35 out of 116 registered PGs comply.
Suralkar Vikas Kishore, Special Commissioner (Welfare), BBMP, said, “The rise in unauthorized PGs and rampant non-compliance is a matter of serious concern. We are increasing inspection and enforcement measures to ensure that all PG accommodation safety standards are met.” And follow regulatory guidelines.” ,
