Surya Nagar residents hold taxes for urgent civic reforms


Hyderabad:Residents are disappointed with the lack of civic works in their area Suryanagar in the colony Shackpet decided to hold them back property tax Payment. Instead, they want to put the money toward improving their neighborhoods.

There are 500 houses in the colony, each of which pays ₹10,000 (on average) as tax.

Many people, even jokingly, call it a posh slum and complain about how the colony suffers from a number of issues including bad roads, sewage overflows and rampant illegal construction.

“Since the colony with a population of 5,000 has been grappling with infrastructure issues for years, if the civic authorities do not show any interest in carrying out development works, the residents will resort to collecting their tax money to develop the roads and sewage network. Will take matters into our own hands.

Asif Sohail Hussain, president of Jubilee Hills Constituency Colony Forum, said despite being diligent in paying property tax, electricity and water bills, residents are facing substandard living conditions.

“Our colony has become a dangerous place for commuting, its roads are full of potholes and cracks. We have repeatedly contacted GHMCBut our cries have gone unheard,” said Fazal Siddiqui, a resident. He said, “The deteriorating condition of the roads has made even a simple task like walking risky. The elderly and children are particularly vulnerable, as they have difficulty walking on the streets.”

Pointing to the poor sewage system, another resident Munir Ahmed said that the roads are often filled with sewage water, making the roads bad. The outbreak of mosquito borne diseases like dengue is continuously increasing in the colony. He said, the stagnant water has turned the area into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and this is sad.

An executive engineer of Jubilee (GHMC) said, “We have sanctioned Rs 70 lakh for the construction of new CC roads in Surya Nagar. The contract will be awarded in October and work will start in the same month to improve the road condition ” Hills.
