Bengaluru PG owners ready for new BBMP guidelines amid demand for amendments, ET RealEstate

The guidelines were issued in July after a man barged into a PG residence in Koramangala and killed his estranged girlfriend.

The association is particularly against the norm that PGs should have 70 square feet area per inmate and wants a simplified licensing process.

Association president DT Arun Kumar said it will organize an awareness meeting and more than 2,500 PG owners are expected to participate in it. BBMP Special Commissioner (Health) Suralkar Vikas Kishore will be present along with other civic officials.

“We requested the Palike to simplify some rules in favor of PG owners. The civic body has agreed and we are hopeful that it will issue revised guidelines in the meeting,” Kumar said.

“There are 15,000 to 20,000 PGs in the city, and only 2,500 have licenses. Whenever some untoward incidents happen, BBMP officials issue guidelines and ask us to implement them. These 2,500 licensed PGs are already They are following the norms issued by BBMP and police, he said, adding, “We have requested the Municipal Corporation not to harass them.”

Kumar further claimed that several PGs had applied for licenses from the BBMP, but the jurisdictional authorities rejected them citing technical reasons including their location in residential areas and roads less than 30 feet wide. He said that BBMP should simplify these issues as people living prefer PGs located in residential areas.

The association also sought relaxation in the mandatory 90-day retention period for CCTV footage. The association informed the BBMP that the PGs have taken necessary fire-safety measures and are not required to obtain a no-objection certificate from the fire and emergency services.

The association said it will follow norms such as food certification, maintaining hygiene and providing foolproof security cover.
