Bhopal: In a widespread practice, Bhopal Municipal Corporation ,BMC) now seeks urban redevelopment in the state capital through slum rehabilitation with private participation under PPP-mode.
The estimated target population of the survey is approximately 5 lakh. Major slums of Bhopal located in an area of more than 650 acres will be covered under the scope of the project.
For these purposes, a socio-economic survey of slums and provision of community support services to implement the ‘Slum Free Bhopal’ scheme has been approved by the BMC.
The project targets the urban poor, including slum dwellers, and aims to rehabilitate these communities by using land resources and involving private developers through PPP-mode.
Once the identification process is over, the slum land will be monetized. Many slums are located near major places.
Private developers will transform the slum by building new housing for slum dwellers and creating commercial space for project feasibility.
BMC Additional Commissioner Nidhi Singh said, “The project involves long-term urban planning and socio-economic development initiatives within Bhopal, covering around 388 slums and over 1.5 lakh households.”
The initial phase of the project involves conducting software-based socio-economic surveys, including MIS entry of households in the identified slums.
During the development phase, the private developer will bear the expenses related to housing provisions of the displaced persons, providing assistance for transition and rehabilitation, where necessary.
