Mizoram launches solar rooftop scheme to cut power costs

aizawl, Mizoram Power and Electricity Minister Rodingliana on Wednesday unveiled a new scheme under PM-Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme ,PM-SGMBY), offers the option to set up homes rooftop solar systemThe initiative aims to help residents reduce their electricity expenses.

During a press conference in Aizawl, Rodingliana detailed how the Center is offering subsidies for rooftop solar installations to enable domestic power generation through solar energy. The program is targeted at one crore households across the country, with the central government providing subsidized solar systems.

“This initiative is expected to help reduce electricity costs and help consumers achieve energy self-sufficiency,” he said. He said the program seeks to reduce dependence on external energy sources while encouraging sustainable practices among citizens.

The minister clarified that the scheme is available exclusively to Indian citizens who are existing electricity consumers with good payment records. This applies only to private residential properties, excluding government and institutional buildings. Applicants must ensure that their details match the information on their electricity bill.

Rodingliana said Mizoram has appointed 12 authorized vendors in collaboration with the state government for rooftop solar installation. Financial assistance is available to Mizoram residents through various nationalized banks including local institutions like SBI and MRB.

The installation cost under the scheme has been fixed at Rs 12,000 within Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits and Rs 18,000 for areas beyond 200 km from the AMC limits. Currently, 2,990 families have registered for the programme, of which 557 applications have been approved.

Consumers interested in solar systems up to 10 kW will have to first register on the state portal, pmsuryagarh.mizoram.gov.in, followed by pmsuryagarh.gov.in. After online approval, consumers can choose from government approved vendors who will provide installation and five years of maintenance services.
